I thought visiting the Frida Kahlo Museum would be the easy part of a Mexico City trip: show up in Coyoacán, pay, walk into the famous blue house, and feel inspired. What actually defined my day at Casa Azul was the booking process and the clock. Getting a timed ticket, choosing the right slot, arriving early enough to stay calm, and then accepting that the museum is a tight, one-way flow through small rooms made my experience far more than “just a museum visit.” If you’re planning to go, treat tickets like a flight booking and treat your Coyoacán itinerary like the real secret sauce.

What I Learned Before Booking: Casa Azul Is Timed Entry Only

The most important thing to know about the Frida Kahlo Museum (Museo Frida Kahlo, Casa Azul) in Mexico City is that it’s not a “walk up and see what happens” attraction. The museum currently states that tickets are sold through its official channels, and the visit is organized by timed entry slots. That matters because Coyoacán is the kind of neighborhood that makes you want to wander first, then pop into the museum when you feel like it. Casa Azul does not reward that approach.

At publication time, the museum’s official information lists Monday as closed, and it shows different opening hours midweek: Wednesday runs later start hours than the rest of the week. The posted schedule also notes evening programs: “Noche Azul” on Thursdays and “Noche de Museos” on the last Wednesday of each month, both of which can change the feel of a visit if you choose those extended hours.

On price, the museum’s official ticketing page currently lists General Admission at MX$320. That figure is easy to remember and easy to underestimate because it’s not the only cost you’ll have. The museum is in a high-demand part of the city, there is no on-site parking, and most travelers end up paying in time as much as money: transit, waiting, timed entry, and the fact that you will not want to rush once you’re inside.
