I’ve taken plenty of boats in the Mexican Caribbean, but the Cancún to Isla Mujeres ferry is one of those deceptively simple rides that gets smoother when you know the micro-details: which terminal you’re actually using, where the queues start, what “open ticket” really means, and why the cheapest-looking option can quietly add a pier fee. Here’s exactly how my crossing went, step by step, and what I’d do differently next time, followed by a last-minute reality check on terminals, schedules, fares, and dock and sanitation fees you’ll want to confirm right before you go.

My Exact Route: Cancún to Isla Mujeres via Ultramar at Puerto Juárez

I took the Ultramar passenger ferry from Cancún’s Puerto Juárez terminal, the main non-Hotel Zone departure point used by locals and day-trippers. The terminal is listed by Ultramar as “Terminal Marítima Ultramar, Av. López Portillo SM-84 M-5 L-6, Puerto Juárez, Cancún 77520, México,” which matters because “Puerto Juárez” gets used loosely in conversation and ride-share apps.

I was staying in central Cancún, not the Hotel Zone, so Puerto Juárez made the most sense. Ultramar also runs Isla Mujeres trips from two Hotel Zone piers, Playa Tortugas (around Km 6.5 on Blvd. Kukulcán) and Playa Caracol, but I wanted the simplest logistics, the most frequent service, and the best odds of getting on the next departure if I showed up early.

One important practical detail: Ultramar’s own route information says you should arrive 30 minutes before departure. I treated that as a minimum, not a suggestion, because missing a ferry by five minutes can easily turn into a longer wait if the next boat is busy or timed around a surge of tour groups.
